How many times will I need to come in?
There are three major phases of chiropractic care: Relief, Rehabilitative and Wellness. Below is a summary of each phase and how our treatments can get you through each and on to a higher quality of life.
- Relief – Usually, patients make their first appointment with us because they have an ache or pain they wish to alleviate. In the first phase of chiropractic care, the primary goal is to reduce or eliminate your pain and stabilize your condition in a short amount of time. In this phase, progress is rapid. You may see relief immediately or over the course of a month. If you are not responding to chiropractic care during this phase, Dr. Michael McGivney may determine that it is best to refer you to another healthcare provider.
- Rehabilitative – Once your condition has been stabilized, you enter the second phase of care, in which the main goal is to correct any underlying injury or source of pain as well as strengthen the muscles surrounding the source and improve range of motion and function. The frequency of office visits will be gradually reduced and care may be supplemented with rehabilitation exercises and lifestyle changes. Remember that many conditions we treat have been developing, usually unnoticed, over the course of years. Therefore, treating these conditions truly is a rehabilitative process. Just because your discomfort has subsided doesn’t mean it is a good idea to abandon your chiropractic visits. If you do so before healing the muscles and soft tissues, a relapse could very easily occur, which will only result in more pain and more money spent!
- Wellness – After the Rehabilitative Phase, you advance to the Wellness Phase, in which the primary goal is to maintain your new level of comfort and improved health by encouraging normal spinal function and preventing the reoccurrence of the original condition. Dr. Michael McGiveny will design a personal wellness care program specifically for you that will enable you to enjoy a life of vitality and endurance.
